Recap of October 3 ZNA Meeting: Foodland Remodeling At the meeting of the Zilker Neighborhood Association, Foodland officials including company president B. J. Armstrong, announced plans to remodel the Lamar Plaza store. New meat and dairy cases, new flooring, a restructured single entrance, and in-store bakery are planned. The remodel is scheduled to start in January and the store will remain open during the estimated six weeks of construction.
Neighbors present at the meeting requested that Foodland consider adding such items as organic vegetables and fruits, a greater variety ofproduce, and better quality locally-baked breads. Shoppers polled at the meeting named Whole Foods, Randalls and Central Market as their principal food stores. Oddly, Mr. Armstrong, a lifelong grocery industry professional, said he had never visited a Whole Foods. Still he claimed a sincere interest in feedback from the neighborhood about our wants and said he would welcome any suggestions. You can call him with your thoughts at Foodland headquarters at 834-9177.

Foodland We Hardly Knew Ye - After the recent Nov. 17th Austin American-Statesman article on the Foodland on Burnet Road closing permanently, much to the distress of it's many elderly and disabled customers, many of us realize the importance of having a grocery store located in the neighborhood. And to have a full blown remodel and restocking effort of our own little Foodland makes us almost giddy with happiness!
We are so pleased with the results of Foodland's remodeling efforts we thought we'd print a letter fiom Ed Fortner, our Lamar Plaza Store Director. It said, (in part)

"We have changed!
Come and take a look at Foodland now. Everything in the store is new from our signs to our selections. Not only do we offer Chinese food, we also have Indian and Thai favorites. Our new in-store bakery and superior wine selection will satistjˇ even the most discriminating palate."

Mr. Fortner then went on to explain the new drive through was a result of the request of many of their customers for easy access. They have also added extra lighting to the outside and planted new trees and other landscaping in the front of the store. The many changes in the store have certainly added quite a bit of traffic, as many of us are finding we no longer need to drive to Westlake or other distant neighborhoods to spend our grocery dollars. We really have noticed and appreciate the additional customer relations efforts as well!
Foodland is offering readers of the ZNews a free loaf of either french bread or Foodland bread as a way of expressing their thanks to the neighborhood for our support. See the coupon on ZNews back page. Mr. Fortner's phone number is 442-6731.

Foodland Update - The much anticipated remodel and upgrade of the Foodland store has been delayed G months due to the red tape that goes with major architectural revamps, according to B.J. Armsuong, president and owner. He assures us that work should begin this summer.
A happier bit of Grocery Store News is that Sun Harvest is relocating their store from Ben White to the recently vacated Whole Foods in Brodie Oaks.
