foodland
Foodland We Hardly Knew Ye - After the recent Nov. 17th Austin American-Statesman article on the Foodland on Burnet Road closing permanently, much to the distress of it's many elderly and disabled customers, many of us realize the importance of having a grocery store located in the neighborhood. And to have a full blown remodel and restocking effort of our own little Foodland makes us almost giddy with happiness!
We are so pleased with the results of Foodland's remodeling efforts we thought we'd print a letter fiom Ed Fortner, our Lamar Plaza Store Director. It said, (in part)

"We have changed!
Come and take a look at Foodland now. Everything in the store is new from our signs to our selections. Not only do we offer Chinese food, we also have Indian and Thai favorites. Our new in-store bakery and superior wine selection will satistjˇ even the most discriminating palate."

Mr. Fortner then went on to explain the new drive through was a result of the request of many of their customers for easy access. They have also added extra lighting to the outside and planted new trees and other landscaping in the front of the store. The many changes in the store have certainly added quite a bit of traffic, as many of us are finding we no longer need to drive to Westlake or other distant neighborhoods to spend our grocery dollars. We really have noticed and appreciate the additional customer relations efforts as well!
Foodland is offering readers of the ZNews a free loaf of either french bread or Foodland bread as a way of expressing their thanks to the neighborhood for our support. See the coupon on ZNews back page. Mr. Fortner's phone number is 442-6731.

lost_canyon
Lost Canyon Update - The City of Austin environmenta department has granted a variance to the developers of the Lost Canyon office and retail complex behind the Shamrock station at Kinney Ave. and Barton Springs Rd. This appears to dear all hurdles as far as the city is concerned and the developer, Cook-Joyce, is now in a position to precede with permitting and construction. The Zilker neighborhood is opposed to the development's construction of a driveway onto Kinney Ave. (across from the Flipnotics parking lot) as an access into the approximately 150 parking space development. The neighborhood felt that the drive posed grave safety and traffic concerns, but the transportation staff, headed by George Zapalac, granted variances and ignored neighborhood-provided engineering reports and data and accommodated the developer. The city council and planning commission is powerless" to intervene since this project falls under the guidelines for an administrative site plan and requires only city staff approval.
The environmental department has previously denied the developer's request for exemption from flood control detention ponds (which would have made his project much more difficult and costly) but has apparently "caved in" to pressure from the developer, his engineers and his attorneys. Those who use Kinney to enter and exit the neighborhood at Barton Springs Road can look forward to a traffic and safety nightmare in the near future.
