La Casa Street Zoning Hearing
There will be a hearing on Tuesday, June 24th at 6:00 p.m., before the Planning Commission, 307 West 2nd, City Council Chambers, regarding the re-zoning application of La Casa Imports to change their zoning to COMMERCIAL. This is our chance to let the Commission know this application must be DENIED. This commercial enterprise being operated in a residential neighborhood is illegal, a very serious traffic hazard and a threat to the integrity of the neighborhood.

From President Charles Whiford Lamar Blvd. Bridge
As most of you know by now City Council voted to proceed with the pedestrian and bicycle portion of construction and happily did not approve the expansion of traffic lanes. The bridge is saved this time and hopefully the use of existing alternative routes and future improvements to public transportation will solve the traffic congestion that the $20 million expansion and ruin of the Lamar Bridge would not have solved. Two alternatives are being studied for the pedestrian/bicycle bridge. One is to extend the existing sidewalk out, making them be about 10 feet wide with an outside rail and an inside rail to separate it from traffic (known as the cantilevered alternative). The second alternative is for an entirely separate bridge which is currently proposed to be located about 1 hundred feet from the west side of the existing bridge. Come to the meeting March 20 and let us know your thoughts and feelings.
Thank you Council Members Gus Garcia, for courage to change your mind for reason, Beverly Griffith, for your pedestrian/bicycle proposal, and both Daryl Slusher and Jackie Goodman, for your long standing support of citizen issues.

Like the Neighborhood?
Want to keep it great! Make it even better? You can make a difference!
Safeguarding our neighborhood, maintaining and enhancing its quality and clllrm require involvement. Unfortunately the job becomes more challenging and complex with every passing year. When you attend the ZNA meeting you not only learn about the issues at hand, you also show your support for the volunteers who give their time and talent to act as our spokespersons and represent our best interests. Neighbors, an estimated 3,500 households compromise the Zilker neighborhood. You may be surprised to know that only 35-50 of us usually attend ZNA meetings. Please help swell our number. Mark your calendar, invite your neighbors - come to meet, learn and enjoy!

Lost Canyon Condos (behind the Sigmor Shamrock on Barton Spgs. Rd.) The problem here was the location of the driveway: Should it be on Barton Spgs. Rd. where it has always been, or should it be moved up Kinney Avenue (100 feet up the hill)? The decision is still in limbo. In May, the City Council moved that access should remain on Barton Springs Rd. In October the developer againasked the Council for access to Kinney Ave - citing a traffic study. No one on the Courcil would make a motion me way or the other. As it stands now, if Lost Canyon is to be developed, it will use Barton Springs Road for acess.

Lost Canyon Update - The City of Austin environmenta department has granted a variance to the developers of the Lost Canyon office and retail complex behind the Shamrock station at Kinney Ave. and Barton Springs Rd. This appears to dear all hurdles as far as the city is concerned and the developer, Cook-Joyce, is now in a position to precede with permitting and construction. The Zilker neighborhood is opposed to the development's construction of a driveway onto Kinney Ave. (across from the Flipnotics parking lot) as an access into the approximately 150 parking space development. The neighborhood felt that the drive posed grave safety and traffic concerns, but the transportation staff, headed by George Zapalac, granted variances and ignored neighborhood-provided engineering reports and data and accommodated the developer. The city council and planning commission is powerless" to intervene since this project falls under the guidelines for an administrative site plan and requires only city staff approval.
The environmental department has previously denied the developer's request for exemption from flood control detention ponds (which would have made his project much more difficult and costly) but has apparently "caved in" to pressure from the developer, his engineers and his attorneys. Those who use Kinney to enter and exit the neighborhood at Barton Springs Road can look forward to a traffic and safety nightmare in the near future.

Oh no, it's baaaack! ... Lost Canyon Development - Another development has been proposed for the site adjacent to the Diamond Shamrock at Kinney Avenue hill & Barton Springs Rd.-a three structure, 40,000 sq. ft. office and retail complex with access onto the Kinney Avenue hill. Kinney Avenue is a major neighborhood access road and this plan would greatly affect traffic flow and safety into and out of our neighborhood. Carol Ginn, 444-3303 is the person to call to find our what you can do to help convince the developer to rethink the access road. The clock is ticking on this one, so call soon!
In a related issue, we have asked the police departments S.W area supervisor Lt. Mike Ford (385-7722) to keep an eye on carsd illegally and/or dangerously parked on Kinney hill. We've also been assured that 911 is the number to call to report parking problems.
